1. Screw the Volcano nozzle into the heater block, match the orientation shown in the image.
The top side with the cut-outs is designed to provide room for the heater cartridge and temperature sensor.
2. Screw in the Heatbreak into the top of the Volcano HeaterBlock. Make sure the assembly is only finger tight at this point in time.
Aim to have the top of the HeatBreak flush with the top surface of the HeaterBlock.
Before moving onto the next step check that the nozzle and break are in the correct position as per the above images.
If the nozzle is fastened up against the HeaterBlock at this stage you will run a significant risk of not creating a seal during the hot tightening process which will lead to molten plastic leaking from the assembly.
3. Slide the thermistor in all the way, then fasten in place using an M3 x 3 grub-screw.
Fasten the grub-screw until it just touches the thermistor, then rotate another 1/8th of a turn.
Do not overtighten the grub screw, if you do it will risk cracking the glass bead inside the thermistor.
Before installing the heater cartridge it’s a good idea to double-check you are using the correct heater for the power supply you are using. The cartridge should be engraved with both the voltage and wattage, but it’s still worth double-checking with a multimeter:
- A 12V 30W heater cartridge will read between 4.2 - 5.7 Ω.
- A 12V 40W heater cartridge will read between 3.1 - 3.8 Ω.
- A 24V 30W heater cartridge will read between 16.7 - 22.6 Ω.
- A 24V 40W heater cartridge will read between 12.3 - 15.1 Ω.
If your heater cartridge is reading out of specification contact
support@e3d-online.com, do not attempt to heat up the heater cartridge if the reading is unexpected.
4. Insert the heater cartridge into the top of the volcano heater block.
Fasten in place using 2x M3 x 15mm dome screws until the block deforms slightly.
There is no need to worry about overtightening the Heater cartridge, unlike the thermistor the casing is very tough. The more clamping force the better the thermal contact.
The screw needs to pass through the clearance hole and into the threaded hole in order to clamp the heater cartridge. If you start with the threaded side it will not work!
The Volcano HotSide assembly is now complete, the Volcano HotSide can be substituted for the V6 HotSide in the V6, TItan Aero, Titan Aqua guides.
With a slightly different HeatBreak configuration the Volcano HotSide can be substituted for the V6 HotSide in the Chimera+ and Hemera guides.
